Like many modern success stories, the story of Lars Knutsen and Clode starts from very humble beginnings.

The company was founded in 1852 in Cardiff by Fred Bond Clode, the son of a farmer. His vision set the platform for the company that exists and thrives today. The story however is not a straightforward tale of a company that simply grew and grew. Periods of enormous growth were followed by periods in which the company barely survived. Inevitably, over the 150 years, there were to be tales of successes and failures.
To arrive at where it is today, an internationally renowned ships chandlers and suppliers, the company has has to survive many changes in the world. Two world wars has a profound effect, as did the growth and subsequent demise of the coal and iron industry in Wales.

The company has seen enormous changes to the way business is conducted and in the range of demands made by modern customers. From the supply of livestock when the company started out the range of services has grown and almost anything can be and is supplied by the modern ships chandlers.
This truly is the story of a company that started in the era of the horse and
cart and thrives in the age of the internet and e-commerce.
There have been many changes in leadership and location from its beginnings in Cardiff Dock's, but always there has been a member of the Clode family at its head building and expanding the business.
